Innovation is where my teaching and scholarship become action. I believe meaningful innovation begins with listening to research, to communities, to teacher candidates, and to the evolving needs of children and families. Through collaborative partnerships, curriculum design, and authentic clinical experiences, I create opportunities that connect research with practice while strengthening educator preparation and extending learning beyond the college classroom.
Responding to program growth and workforce needs, I led the development of six new upper-division early childhood education courses designed to strengthen educator preparation through evidence-informed instruction, authentic clinical experiences, and interdisciplinary learning. These courses expanded opportunities for teacher candidates while aligning the curriculum with the evolving needs of children, families, schools, and communities. This initiative reflects my commitment to designing responsive programs that bridge research and practice while preparing educators for today's classrooms.
In partnership with Polk County Public Schools, I helped develop and implement the Early Birds Kindergarten Readiness Initiative, an innovative clinical experience connecting teacher candidates with incoming kindergarten students. The partnership provides authentic opportunities to integrate literacy, assessment, reflective practice, and responsive instruction while supporting children's successful transition to school. Early Birds demonstrates the power of reciprocal partnerships to strengthen educator preparation while serving the broader community.
The success of the Early Birds partnership was highlighted through a collaborative spotlight video showcasing the impact of authentic clinical experiences on teacher candidates and young learners. The feature illustrates how research-informed educator preparation, community partnerships, and reflective practice can create meaningful learning experiences that benefit future teachers, children, and families alike.
Innovation is an ongoing process of asking new questions, building meaningful partnerships, and designing learning experiences that respond to the changing landscape of educator preparation. I remain committed to creating programs, resources, and collaborative initiatives that connect research with practice while preparing educators who will positively impact children, families, schools, and communities.
